Organizing Challenge Week #2 - Office (Closet)

As I mentioned, I converted my guest room into my home office once I realized I'd be working from home indefinitely during the pandemic. The room has a great walk-in closet but it was not as organized as I would like it to be. I decided to move all the board games and toys to the basement. There were so many days when I was on Zoom meetings and my kids would come in to go through the closet to find something to play with. I also organized my master bedroom closet so I had more room to bring back my off-season dresses. We kept our luggage in here because it was convenient, however now that we're not traveling, I moved it to the basement as well.

I thought about taking out the wire shelf and building actual wooden shelves in here but changed my mind quickly for two reasons. 1) It felt too permanent. Maybe one day we would have guests come and they may need to hang something in the closet. 2) we're not the handiest people so it would be a challenge to attempt to build anything.

I'm thrilled with the result - I got rid of a lot of things and now it's much easier to find things. Plus I don't have many places in my house to display picture frames so it's a nice surprise when I go into the closet. The best part of cleaning this room out - I found $50 cash and a few gift cards!

BEFORE

AFTER

WHAT I DID:

  • Moved the board games and plastic drawers with toys to the basement
  • Figured out what I didn't need quick access to and moved that to the basement as well - ex: boxes, luggage, etc.
  • I had been keeping my off-season dresses in this closet but I now had room to put them back into my closet
  • Bought another cubby storage shelf
  • Went through all the office supplies throughout the house and consolidated things like Command hooks, picture hanging supplies and empty notebooks and put them in the closet

FAVORITE PRODUCTS:

  • Cube Organizer Shelf from Target - Target has the best price on these.
  • Greeting card boxes - I love buying the box of 30 cards from Costco for two reasons - 1) the cards are always so pretty and unique. 2) The box they come in is great to hold keepsakes. I have 3 boxes - one for each of my sons and one for me (and my husband although I don't think he cares about it - LOL). I put special cards we received, birthday invitations I designed for them (most are on my Etsy store) and postcards from me. Since I travel a lot for work (pre-COVID), I would get them a postcard from where I was and write them a note.
  • Ikea boxes - Years ago I was in Ikea and they had these great pink and green office boxes. The pink ones are divided and perfect for storage. I keep ribbon in one and command hooks in the other. The large green one holds my notebooks, checkbooks and other important docs.
  • Keepsake Boxes - Since my oldest started going to daycare (he's now 12), I've kept a keepsake box for each of them. The front has a photo of them when they were young. Inside there are folders for each grade with special artwork, awards, etc.
  • Fabric Boxes from Aldi - I picked up these two pink and gold fabric bins from Aldi last week. I now store sheets and blankets in them.
  • Strawberry Shortcake - my maid of honor gave this to me for my wedding because she knew I grew up loving Strawberry Shortcake. It's fun to have a place to display it now, 17 years later!
